Affective Change in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: Theoretical Models and Clinical Approaches to Changing Emotions.

2016

Affective change has been considered the hallmark of therapeutic change in psychoanalysis. Psychoanalytic writers have begun to incorporate theoretically the advanced understanding of emotional processing and transformation of the affective neurosciences. We ask if this theoretical advancement is reflected in treatment techniques addressing the processing of emotion. We review psychoanalytic models and treatment recommendations of maladaptive affect processing in the light of a neuroscientifically informed model of achieving psychotherapeutic change by activation and reconsolidation of emotional memory.Emotions tend to be treated as other mental contents, resulting in a lack of specific psyc…

Acceptability, attitudes and knowledge towards Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) among psychiatrists in France

2020

Abstract Background Non-invasive brain stimulation techniques are becoming a part of psychiatrists’ therapeutic arsenal. Proof of TMS effectiveness and its indications are becoming clearer. While international recommendations exist, and many countries have already recognized the use of these techniques, the French situation is peculiar since no recommendation has been published by the High Authority of Health. Consequently, those techniques are not reimbursed by the healthcare service, few practitioners are trained, some are criticized for using it, and practices remain very heterogeneous. It is therefore important to investigate what slows down the development of these techniques. The obje…

Conscious and unconscious identification of female anorectic patients in in-patient psychotherapy

2009

Women are up to ten times more likely to develop anorexia nervosa (AN) than men. Psychoanalytic explanations of this disparity generally emphasize female identification problems due to unresolved conflicts with maternal representations. Based on clinical observation, we identify a subtype of AN patients characterized, first, by consistent idealization of the father who needs the patient for the fulfilment of his own narcissistic needs and, second, by the patient's need to be idealized by the father due to suffering in connection with early emotional malnutrition on the part of the mother. To illustrate this hypothesis, we present the case of a well-educated young woman displaying unconsciou…

On “Action Language” in Psychoanalysis

1980

The main tenets of action language are summarized in an attempt to discern the direction in which psychoanalysis might go if action language becomes the "new metapsychology." The principal roots of action language are traced to the different linguistic/language and personality-and-culture models of anthropology and to the neobehaviorist currents of academic psychology. The authors' findings support the hypothesis that action language is a form os psychoanalytic behaviorism having idealism, logical positivism, and radical empiricism as its philosophical underpinnings. Its adoption would confound the entire motivational aspect of psychoanalysis. Specifically, the authors suggest that action l…

Using Focus Group in the Development of UNIPA Emotional Autonomy Inventory

2016

Adolescents' Emotional Autonomy from Parents A relevant tenet in developmental psychology is that adolescents are expected to achieve an autonomous functioning, independent from parents, to become reliant on their internal resources and responsible for their actions and decisions. Within this framework, emotional autonomy reflects the affective side of the largest process by which a young person acquires a more mature identity. It emerges when adolescents are capable to abandon dependence on parents and to individuate from them. Moreover, emotional autonomy implies a shift towards a less idealized conception of parental figures, the development of a more complex consideration of them as peo…

Revisiting the left convexity hypothesis: changes in the mental apparatus after left dorso-medial prefrontal damage

2016

It has been 15 years since Kaplan-Solms and Solms published their Clinical Studies in Neuropsychoanalysis, where they proposed a neuroanatomy of the mental apparatus. One of their main observations was that damage to certain areas of the left prefrontal cortex (PFC), particularly those related to expressive language (Broca’s area), did not generate changes in the mental apparatus. However, a limitation of their model was that it did not include patients with damage to other areas of the left PFC. The main goal of this paper is to update Kaplan-Solms and Solms’ model through the description of id, ego and superego changes in a case of left dorso-medial prefrontal damage (Professor F). Data f…

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy in Finland

2020

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is one of the most commonly practiced psychotherapy orientations in Finland. It has secured continuity in the recently renewed university-based educational programs for training psychotherapists, although the proportion of psychoanalytic therapists in relation to other orientations has been decreasing during the past decade. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is reasonably well acknowledged in the Finnish Current Care Guidelines as one option in the treatment of the most common mental disorders, due to recent advances in effectiveness research. There is funding provided by the national insurance system for patients attending long-term rehabilitative psychotherapy. It h…

Visualization of Jacques Lacan’s Registers of the Psychoanalytic Field, and Discovery of Metaphor and of Metonymy. Analytical Case Study of Edgar All…

2017

International audience; We start with a description of Lacan’s work that we then take into our analytics methodology. In a first investigation, a Lacan-motivated template of the Poe story is fitted to the data. A segmentation of the storyline is used in order to map out the diachrony. Based on this, it will be shown how synchronous aspects, potentially related to Lacanian registers, can be sought. This demonstrates the effectiveness of an approach based on a model template of the storyline narrative. In a second and more comprehensive investigation, we develop an approach for revealing, that is, uncovering, Lacanian register relationships. Objectives of this work include the wide and genera…
